This image is a colored black & white image of Temperance Street in St. John's. These houses, also known as Samuel Garrett Houses were built by Garrett (also the designer and builder of Cabot Tower).
Some of the work on the homes began as early as 1897, the last being fully completed in 1901. Garrett built the homes with stone from the destroyed St. George's Hospital for his four daughters. The basements were carved out of the cliff side bedrock and are all attached with doorways to each other providing safe access for his daughters to visit their sisters...And that's how the print got its name |
